Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, NRM Secretary General, expressed his admiration for the remarkable progress in steady economic growth in Karamoja, a region once plagued by violence and poverty. He noted the area’s steady growth and development as a beacon of hope. The transformation in Karamoja stands as a testament to the power of resilience and dedicated efforts.
He made the remarks on Tuesday in the Moroto district as he toured some of the significant businesses and factories that employ several young people.
“We knew Karamoja for violence but due to the relative peace and stability brought by the NRM, the region today is becoming a home to very many factories dealing in mineral development hence creating jobs for the nearby communities,” SG Todwong said.
“I am very impressed by the exponential growth of Moroto district due to the increasing numbers of potential investors in agriculture, mining, tourism and hotel management among others. This is the real fundamental change that was envisioned by President Museveni in 1986,” The NRM secretariat’s head said as he, together with his fellow principal, the Director of Finance and Administration, Hajjat Medina Naham concluded the 3-day mobilisation tour in Karamaja.
On Monday, over 18 Members of Parliament from the region told Todwong at a meeting in Moroto town that they were endorsing President Yoweri Museveni as the NRM’s sole candidate in the 2026 elections.
The legislators commended President Museveni for championing peace restoration and inclusivity of the country’s northeastern sub-region in nation-building.
“He has been a parent to us and the only way to demonstrate our love is by igniting his endorsement for sole candidature for 2026 and beyond,” MPs told the ruling party’s Secretary General.
Mr Todwong and his team also visited the NRM supporters and elders in villages (Manyattas) to listen to their plea to the government, leaving them with assurances to address them through the right channels.
The team also visited government SEED schools and interacted with students and administration to assess their issues.
Visit to the Moroto Central Market
The Secretary-General visited the central market and held discussions with the traders. During the discussions, Todwong thanked the traders for their efforts in improving the standards of living in Moroto and Karamoja as a whole. He pledged Sh10 million on behalf of the party towards the traders’ Sacco, stating that this contribution will help the traders obtain better interest loans and expand their businesses
