Teachers and non-teaching staff at Kampala Parents School have officially called off their sit-down strike following a series of meetings with key stakeholders, including businessman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia who owns the school. The school’s Principal, Ms. Daphine Kato, confirmed the resolution, stating;
“We have honourably committed ourselves to the course of education and that is education first and the rest later. However, as mature and responsible people we reached an understanding and we have promised to look into the issues brought forward by staff” Ms Daphine Kato, the Principal of the school confirmed shortly after the meeting.
In a similar response, both teaching and non-teaching staff through their representatives confirmed that normal learning activities would resume on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, with end-of-year exams scheduled for Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, 2024.
”We, the staff, both teaching and non-teaching staff of Kampala Parents’ School hereby inform you our dear parents that the sit-down strike that has been going on since Friday last week, has come to an end. After a series of meetings and interactions with different stake holders, our grievances have largely been attended to for those that were short term and good strategies laid
for those that were long term” reads part of the notice from the staff.
The staff, who went on strike last week to protest low pay, delayed salaries and allegations of unequal treatment, have agreed to resume teaching tomorrow.
”We now call Upon you now for the resumption of normal learning tomorrow 27″
November 2024 and then examination for the End of year on Thursday,28th and
Friday,29th November 2024. We continually thank you for understanding and standing strong with us as we requested to be heard. We can only thank you enough by teaching and nurturing your children even more” the notice adds.
During the meeting with Dr. Ruparelia, teachers and non-teaching staff indicated that they had no grievances with him directly.
The protest, which gained significant attention after a viral video showed teachers airing their frustrations, raised concerns due to the school’s reputation as one of Uganda’s top institutions.
However, Ms. Kato assured parents and other stakeholders in the school that the strike was a minor disruption that has been handled by management and normal teaching activities had resumed.
