This landmark accomplishment propels Uganda into the global league of countries proficient in conducting organ transplants, signifying a remarkable advancement in the nation’s medical capabilities.


In Uganda, kidney disease is on the rise and ranks among the top 10 causes of death, with a case fatality rate of 21% among patients admitted with Chronic Kidney Disease.
Bridging a critical healthcare gap, Mulago National Referral Hospital has initiated the practice of conducting organ transplants, with kidney complications being the second most prevalent condition necessitating referrals to foreign countries, following heart complications.

This week, Ugandan doctors, in collaboration with professionals from India, successfully executed the country’s inaugural organ transplant.
