In a step to improve road safety, accountability and security within the Boda-Boda transport sector, a new initiative has been launched in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
All Boda-Boda riders will now be required to wear standardized, reflective jackets that feature their photo, name, contact information and a QR code for easy identification. The jackets will be color-coded based on the rider’s division with distinct colors assigned to each area for clear recognition. For example:
- Pink for Kampala Central
- Dark Blue for Makindye
- Forest Green for Nakawa
Additionally, these jackets will be linked to the rider’s motorcycle registration details, including the bike’s number plate, creating a more transparent system for tracking and identifying riders.
A significant step forward in rider safety, all new motorcycles will now come with two standard helmets, one for the rider and one for the passenger. This decision comes after a consultative meeting between motorcycle assembly companies, dealers and financiers, ensuring that no motorcycle leaves the assembly plant without these essential safety items.
Strict regulations surrounding helmet standards are already in place, and any motorcycle that fails to comply will not be allowed to register.
This initiative is just one of many measures being taken to streamline the Boda-Boda industry and restore order to Uganda’s roads. Through these regulations, authorities aim to improve rider accountability, enhance safety standards, and bring much-needed order to the rapidly growing sector.
