Rwanda has confirmed two new mpox cases, bringing the total number of infections to six since July 27. The initial four patients have already recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
The Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) has initiated vaccination efforts, prioritizing healthcare workers and cross-border traders. Alongside vaccination, RBC has intensified public awareness campaigns, emphasizing caution in sexual contact, a key driver of mpox transmission.
Julien Niyingabira, Health Communications Division Manager at RBC, explained that mpox spreads through close physical contact, especially during intimate activities. “Unlike COVID-19, which spreads through respiratory droplets, mpox transmits via direct skin contact and bodily fluids, making condoms ineffective in fully preventing the virus,” he said.
Niyingabira advised avoiding sexual contact with individuals displaying symptoms like rashes or fever and stressed seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
RBC’s awareness campaign also focuses on debunking myths and reducing stigma, reinforcing that mpox can affect anyone if precautions are not followed.
