In response to recent attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists in the Rwenzori Sub-region, President Yower Kaguta Museveni & who is also the Commander-In-Chief had issued a directive for the reactivation of Local Defence Structures in the vicinity of Kibale National Park and Greater Rwenzori Sub-region. This initiative aims to safeguard communities from potential ADF attacks.
The UPDF (Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces) hereby announces the mobilization and recruitment of Local Defence Personnel (LDPs) in the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, Bunyangabo, Kyenjojo, and Kasese.


The recruitment process will be conducted in two phases. Phase 1 is scheduled to take place from December 27, 2023, to January 10, 2024, covering the districts of Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, and Bunyangabo.
Following Phase 1, Phase 2 will encompass the districts of Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, and Kasese, commencing immediately after Phase 1 with a similar recruitment procedure.

The mobilization and recruitment effort will span sixty (60) Parishes/Wards, adhering to the Quota system. Each Parish/Ward is expected to contribute 12 recruits, resulting in a total of 720 personnel during Phase 1.


The recruitment criteria include:
- Citizenship of Uganda
- Willingness to Volunteer Service
- Physical and medical fitness
- Adults aged between 18-45 years
- Minimum education of Primary Seven (P.7)
- Duly signed letters of recommendation from the LC1 Chairperson, Defence Secretary, and DISO/GISO
- Residency in the area
- No criminal record
- Disciplined conduct
- No other employment/engagement
The mobilization process will be overseen by Resident District Commissioner, Deputy Resident District Commissioners, Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, Uganda Police Force, Internal Security Organisation, LC1 Chairpersons, and Secretaries for Defence.
