President Yoweri Museveni has awarded renowned Ugandan businessman and philanthropist Dr Sudhir Ruparelia with the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer) in recognition of his pivotal role in shaping the country’s development.
Dr Sudhir, the Chairman Ruparelia Group of Companies received a prestigious medal at the 39th NRM/A Victory Day Anniversary Celebrations held on 26th January 2025, at the National Teachers College in Mubende.

The Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane is one of Uganda’s highest honors, awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service in public or private sectors.

Speaking at the event, the President hailed Dr Sudhir’s dedication to economic transformation, describing him as “a true patriot and visionary leader whose contributions continue to shape Uganda’s future.”
“Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia is not only a beacon of entrepreneurial success but also a true patriot who has invested in our country’s growth and global stature,” Museveni said.

On his part, Dr Sudhir, who also serves as Nepal’s honorary consul in Uganda, expressed gratitude for the recognition. “This medal is a testament to the resilience of the Ugandan people and the opportunities this great nation offers,” Sudhir said.
Dr. Sudhir’s remarkable contributions to Uganda’s economy and society have earned him this accolade, further cementing his legacy as a transformative figure in the region.
Sudhir’s Journey in Transforming Uganda’s Economy
Born on 17th January 1956 in Kampala, Dr. Sudhir’s journey is a story of resilience and ambition. As a refugee in the United Kingdom, he worked multiple jobs, purchasing his first house at just 20 years old.
In 1985, he returned to Uganda with $25,000 in savings and founded the Ruparelia Group, which has since grown into a multi-sector conglomerate spanning real estate, financial services, education, hospitality, agriculture, and media.
Today, the group employs over 8,000 people and ranks as one of the country’s largest taxpayers.

Dr. Sudhir’s contributions to education and infrastructure are transformative.
His investments include leading institutions such as Kampala International School, Kampala Parents’ School, Victoria University Kampala, and Delhi Public School International, which have set benchmarks for quality education in Uganda.
In the hospitality sector, Speke Resort Munyonyo has become a preferred venue for major global events, including the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and the G77+ China Summit, showcasing Uganda as a hub for international diplomacy and tourism.
Under his philanthropic arm of Ruparelia Foundation, Dr Sudhir has been a driving force in philanthropy, supporting healthcare, education, wildlife conservation, and poverty alleviation. The foundation has donated over $1 million to charitable causes, reaffirming his commitment to improving lives.

Dr Sudhir’s business acumen has also significantly impacted Uganda’s economy. Meera Investments Ltd, under the Ruparelia Group, is Uganda’s largest property developer, while Rosebud Ltd dominates the country’s flower export market. These ventures have not only created thousands of jobs but also positioned Uganda as a key player in regional trade.
The country’s richest billionaire has received numerous accolades over the years, including an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Uganda Pentecostal University and a Golden Jubilee Independence Medal for his outstanding contributions to investment and development.
And the addition of the distinguished Crested Crane Medal award highlights Sudhir’s pivotal role in driving Uganda’s socio-economic progress and his unwavering commitment to national development.
His efforts in hosting landmark events, such as the NAM and G77+ China Summits, have further amplified Uganda’s stature on the global stage.
