Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) on Monday, July 28, paid tribute to its retiring officers and those whose contracts have ended, acknowledging their vital contributions to national liberation, ending the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and rebuilding Rwanda into a model of resilience and development.
The occasion marked the 13th edition of RDF’s annual retirement ceremony. The official farewell for generals and senior officers took place at RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura, while junior officers and enlisted personnel were honored at various division headquarters across the country, and at the General Headquarters in Kanombe for Kigali-based units.

Representing the President and Commander-in-Chief, Minister of Defence Juvenal Marizamunda presided over the ceremony and expressed deep appreciation for the veterans’ unwavering service.

“You were pillars of the liberation struggle and defenders of peace who stopped the Genocide against the Tutsi. Since then, you have played a central role in shaping the RDF into a professional, respected force both in Rwanda and on international peacekeeping missions. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations,” said Minister Marizamunda.
He emphasized that even in retirement, the officers’ expertise and patriotic spirit remain valuable to the country.
General Mubarakh Muganga, RDF Chief of Defence Staff, praised the retirees’ discipline and dedication, noting that the RDF’s core values would continue to guide them.
“Retirement from uniformed service does not mean retirement from the values of patriotism, integrity, and sacrifice. These will always remain with you, and you will still be called upon when needed,” he remarked.
Gen. Muganga also recognized the crucial role played by the spouses of service members, thanking them for their endurance and support over the years.
Speaking on behalf of the retiring officers, Major General (Rtd) Wilson Gumisiriza expressed gratitude for the guidance and leadership of President Paul Kagame, under whose direction the RDF evolved into a highly respected and capable institution.
“We thank the Commander-in-Chief for his visionary leadership that has elevated the RDF to global esteem. Although we are retiring from active duty, our commitment to serving our country remains strong,” Gumisiriza affirmed.
The ceremony not only honored years of service but also reinforced the idea that retirement does not end one’s duty to the nation—it simply begins a new chapter of service in different ways.
