Speke Resort Munyonyo, Uganda’s leading lakeside conference and hospitality destination under the Ruparelia Group, has once again become the centre of attention this week as it hosts the 5th National Safe Motherhood Conference.
The three-day gathering, which kicked off on October 22, 2025, has attracted hundreds of health professionals, policymakers and development partners focused on accelerating Uganda’s maternal and new-born health agenda.

Presided over by Her Royal Highness Sylvia Nagginda, the Nnaabagereka of Buganda, the conference opened with a powerful appeal to safeguard the lives of women and children through stronger health systems and better access to care.

“No woman should lose her life while giving birth. Safe motherhood is not a privilege—it is a right,”
the Nnaabagereka declared, urging sustained investment in antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and postpartum support to curb preventable maternal deaths.
Among the keynote speakers was Charlotte Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Ambassador for Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) Prevention, who emphasized the need for greater community awareness and accessibility to lifesaving interventions. She applauded the Ministry of Health for its progress in scaling up PPH prevention programs, citing a 44% rise in postpartum family planning uptake between FY2023/24 and FY2024/25.

According to the Ministry of Health, PPH remains Uganda’s leading cause of maternal mortality, contributing to 25–40% of maternal deaths, with the national maternal mortality ratio estimated between 189 and 336 deaths per 100,000 live births.
The conference agenda featured high-level discussions on strengthening health systems, advancing obstetric innovations, and empowering midwives to enhance community-based maternal care. It also fostered collaboration among government agencies, health practitioners, civil society, and international partners committed to ending preventable maternal deaths.
Hosting such the significant national event once again highlights the Speke Resort Munyonyo’s reputation as the country’s top choice for world-class conferences and summits.
Owned by city business magnate Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, the resort continues to play a central role in supporting Uganda’s development agenda by providing a premier venue for discussions of national importance.
Nestled along the serene shores of Lake Victoria, Speke Resort and its sister property, the Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo, offer a unique blend of luxury, comfort, and Ugandan hospitality. The two properties boast East and Central Africa’s largest conference facilities, featuring 19 halls, expansive outdoor spaces, and accommodations ranging from Presidential Suites and Cottages to Executive Rooms, all designed to provide an elegant experience for delegates and guests.
Beyond its scenic views and modern amenities, Speke Resort Munyonyo has hosted numerous global summits, including CHOGM 2007, Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China summits, solidifying its status as Uganda’s preferred venue for high-profile government, corporate, and diplomatic engagements.
By hosting the National Safe Motherhood Conference, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia’s establishment once again reinforces its legacy, not just as a symbol of luxury, but as a venue that facilitates meaningful national dialogue on health, progress, and human development.
