Parliament has directed the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuyeto present an update next week on the delayed closure of the Kiteezi landfill and compensation of families affected by last year’s collapse.
The directive followed a matter of national importance raised by East Kyadondo MP Muwada Nkunyingi, who questioned why government had not acted on earlier commitments to close the site and relocate affected residents.

“This tragedy was predicted, but 14 months later, families are still suffering and waiting for help,” Nkunyingi said, reminding the House that warnings about the landfill’s safety were raised as early as 2021.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who chaired the session, said the matter was serious and required a formal statement from the responsible ministry. He instructed the Minister for Kampala to appear before Parliament next week with a comprehensive report on progress made, including the status of compensation and relocation efforts.
