I was shocked this week to see Kiwanda Suubi, fresh from a devastating defeat in Mityana North, shamelessly launching campaigns for re-election to the NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC). How can a leader who was overwhelmingly rejected by his own people turn around and ask for an even bigger role in the party? This is not just arrogance; it is a blatant disregard for the very voters who dismissed him.
The CEC is not a consolation prize for failed politicians—it is the nerve center of the NRM, responsible for strategy, mobilization, and decision-making. A leader who couldn’t convince his own constituents to trust him has no business sitting at the high table of the ruling party. The message from Mityana North was clear: Kiwanda lacks the grassroots appeal and credibility needed for leadership. Why, then, should the NRM reward failure?

Some may argue that losing an MP race doesn’t disqualify him from CEC, but this was no ordinary loss—it was a total collapse of support from the people who know him best. If he couldn’t mobilize his own backyard, how can he mobilize the entire Buganda region? The NRM needs winners, not liabilities.

For the sake of the party’s future, Kiwanda must do the honorable thing: withdraw from the CEC race. The NRM cannot afford to be led by leaders who have lost touch with the people. Let this be a lesson—leadership is earned, not inherited or demanded.
The people have spoken. Kiwanda, spare us the embarrassment—step aside!
