While the EAC functions as both a trade bloc and a customs union there have been concerns about Kenya and Tanzania. The economies in the region. Allegedly attempting to limit trade.
Criticism has been voiced against the bloc for expanding without achieving integration. The admission of Somalia along with approval for membership from the Democratic Republic of Congo. A country still dealing with conflict in its region. Has faced scrutiny.
The East African Community has also encountered challenges stemming from conflicts among member states. Critics argue that such conflicts undermine progress within the bloc. For example Kinshasa has accused Kigali of supporting M23 rebels as a proxy and waging war, against it.
