The National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders and supporters in Tororo district on Friday hailed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his longstanding commitment to empowering women and young people, as well as for steering Uganda through four decades of peace and socioeconomic transformation.
Speaking at the rally, MP-elect for the elderly persons in Eastern Uganda, Ofwono Opondo, who went through unopposed on the NRM ticket, expressed gratitude to his colleagues for entrusting him with the mandate and reaffirmed his support for the President’s campaign.

Opondo praised President Museveni as “the man of the season,” noting that the gains Uganda enjoys today—peace, security, stability and economic transformation—are shared by all regions, including Tororo. He highlighted the remarkable progress of women under NRM stewardship, saying they have moved “from the gardens and the kitchen to decision-making tables” in government, councils and the judiciary.

He noted that women today run thriving enterprises, control capital and own land—achievements he attributed to NRM’s deliberate empowerment agenda. On youth development, Opondo said the ruling party has opened vast opportunities that no longer limit young people to government employment. “A young person can start a corner kiosk and thrive if they are consistent, disciplined and patient,” he said.
At the same rally—held at Lions Park—President Museveni reassured Tororo residents that government has completed its part in resolving long-standing district boundary concerns. He said the elevation of Tororo Municipality to city status and the creation of Mukuju, Mulanda and Kisoko districts were meant to provide administrative fairness to all communities. The President said he would “check with the Attorney General” to ensure all legal steps are finalized.

The President also outlined major infrastructure plans under the 2026–2031 NRM manifesto, emphasizing completion of nationwide backbone infrastructure such as roads, power, water systems and health facilities. He confirmed government funding for the Tororo–Nagongela–Kisoko–Busulwe–Busaba road and noted ongoing works on the Busia–Tororo road, stressing that such roads directly support production, trade and market access.
In the health sector, Museveni announced upgrades of Malaba, Lyolwa and Paaya Health Centre IIIs to Health Centre IV status, alongside the enhancement of 19 Health Centre IIs. These improvements aim to eliminate gaps in sub-counties currently lacking government health facilities.

On education, the President criticised the persistence of school fees in government schools, warning that they remain a key barrier to universal access despite government investment. “School fees are a danger. The future of these children is being destroyed,” he cautioned, calling for internal NRM discussions to fast-track free education.
The Parliament Speaker and NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) Rt. Hon. Anita Among pledged to ensure the implementation of the President’s directives on Tororo’s administrative matters. Eastern Region NRM Vice Chairperson Hon. Calvin Echodu applauded residents for turning up in large numbers despite the rain. Tororo District NRM Chairperson Hon. Yeri Apollo Ofwono thanked President Museveni for creating the three new districts and granting Tororo city status.

The rally ended with renewed calls for unity, continuity and a clear message from NRM: peace, infrastructure and empowerment—especially for women and youth—remain central pillars of the party’s agenda for the next five years.
