The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 2 Infantry Division hosted the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) 2 Infantry Division in the third edition of the Proximity Football Match that was played on Saturday at Kabale Stadium.
The friendly match between the sister forces ended in a 5-2 win in favour of the hosts. UPDF captain Aijuka Edgar and Roberto Baggio each scored twice, while Wasswa Julius added a fifth. RDF’s Ntwali Asman netted both goals for the visitors.

While opening the match, the Minister of State for Finance, Hon. Henry Musasizi, praised the long-standing relationship between the two forces. He described the UPDF and RDF as “one people separated only by borders” and highlighted the deep cultural ties shared by communities across both countries.

Hon. Musasizi said the collaboration reflects the spirit of regional integration under the East African Community. “These engagements move us closer to the East African Federation,” he said. He added that peace and stability remain key to economic growth and cross-border trade and commended the UPDF for its consistent efforts in safeguarding national security.

The Commander of the UPDF 2 Infantry Division, Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, said the match is part of the Proximity Commanders’ Initiative, which aims to build trust, deepen operational understanding and strengthen social bonds between the two forces.

“Peace is strengthened when soldiers interact not only through security operations but also through sports, culture and community engagements,” he said. He noted that sports reflect values central to military service. “Teamwork, discipline, strategy and respect are the values we share both on the field and in uniform.”

Maj Gen Muhanguzi praised both teams for their discipline and sportsmanship, saying the event went “beyond sports” and showcased unity and cooperation between the forces.
RDF 2 Infantry Division Commander Brig Gen Deo Rusanganwa said the match demonstrated “the brotherhood, cooperation and mutual respect that continue to guide the relationship between our two forces.” He said sports provide a unique platform to build teamwork and camaraderie, which improves operational cooperation.

He added that the Proximity Football Match is not only a sporting event but an operational tool that strengthens cohesion and readiness for joint missions.

The match drew defence attachés from both countries, including Brig Gen Emmanuel Shillingi of Uganda and Col Emmanuel Ruzindana of Rwanda. Other officials present included Gicumbi Mayor Mr. Nzabonimpa Emmanuel, Kabale District Chairperson Mr. Nelson Nshangabasheija and the 2 Division Administration Officer, Col William Kakuru, among others.
