Preparations are in full swing for Uganda’s inaugural Africa Coffee Marathon, set to run from May 21 to 24, 2025, at the Africa Coffee Park in Rwashamaire, Ntungamo District. Stakeholders and organizing committee members gathered on Monday afternoon at Twed Towers in Kampala to finalize strategic plans for the landmark event, which aims to blend innovation, business, and entertainment under the theme, “Uplifting the Rural Coffee Woman Out of Poverty.”
The four-day event will mark the first of its kind in Uganda, celebrating the country’s coffee sector while highlighting opportunities for rural women, innovation, and economic empowerment. According to the official promotional poster and planning updates, the event will feature a rich lineup of activities, including the Mustard Seed Innovation & Exhibition, the Women in Business Conference, the Coffee Value Addition Hub Launch, and the Africa Business Investment Forum.

Day one, May 21, will open with the Women in Business Conference, graced by First Lady Janet Museveni as Chief Guest. The same day will see the launch of the Coffee Value Addition Hub, with President Yoweri Museveni and the First Lady both expected to preside over the event. This launch is anticipated to catalyze rural economic transformation by encouraging local value addition within Uganda’s lucrative coffee industry.

On May 22, business leaders, investors, and policymakers will converge for the Africa Business Investment Forum, a high-level platform to explore new investment opportunities within Uganda’s agribusiness and coffee value chain. The forum will run concurrently with the Mustard Seed Innovation & Exhibition, which will span all four days, showcasing agricultural technology, local innovations, and youth-driven start-ups.
The event’s climax will be the Coffee Marathon and Mega Concert on May 24, designed to unite communities through fitness, music, and culture. Registered participants will receive a full marathon kit and concert access, with tickets going for UGX 30,000 via www.coffeemarathonug.com. The star-studded concert will feature Diamond Platnumz, Eddy Kenzo, Ray G and other top artists performing live at the Africa Coffee Park.
The visionary behind this transformative initiative is Nelson Tugume, the CEO of Inspire Africa and the mastermind behind the Africa Coffee Park.
Speaking during the Monday planning meeting, Tugume emphasized the strategic role the marathon plays in redefining rural economies.
“The Coffee Marathon is not just a run—it’s a revolution. We are using coffee as a platform to connect rural communities to global opportunities, and our vision is to see the rural coffee women uplifted through innovation, access to markets, and sustainable business models rooted in our own soil.
Tugume further noted that the marathon’s broader mission is to support rural women who are the backbone of Uganda’s coffee production.
“This isn’t just an event; it’s a movement to economically empower women and showcase Uganda’s potential to the continent. This event is also expected to draw regional attention, boosting tourism and investment in the southwestern region” he revealed.
With every thing set on ground, the countdown begins and all roads will lead to Ntungamo for this coffee celebration like no other.

The factory has previously attracted national attention, with past visitors including President Museveni, First Lady Janet Museveni, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, and various parliamentary committees.
With an ambitious goal of growing Uganda’s coffee earnings from USD 1 billion to USD 5 billion in just five years, the private sector-led initiative is placing value addition at the heart of its strategy with over 18 types of coffee products.
At the centre of this transformation is the Africa Coffee Park, a massive complex in Rwashamaire, Ntungamo District in Western Uganda. The facility is the largest of its kind in Eastern and Central Africa and is equipped with state-of-the-art freeze-drying technology, a processing innovation used by industry giants like Nestlé to produce high-quality instant coffee.
According to Dr. Tugume, the introduction of freeze-dry technology marks a significant upgrade from traditional processing methods and by preserving flavour, aroma and nutritional integrity, the technology positions Uganda to compete in premium coffee markets, including Europe, North America, and Asia.
”Beyond instant coffee, the facility will also produce coffee, cosmetics and beauty products like scrubs, which are among the 18 coffee products, all in chain which will open up new markets and revenue streams under the growing trend of wellness and lifestyle branding” Tugume said while addressing the media recently.
”The Africa Coffee Park is more than a processing plant, it is a coffee ecosystem featuring various facilities including; Sports Complex, Exhibition Centre, Coffee Academy and IT Innovation Park to support Africa’s AI ambitions among others. All these components are designed not only to support production and training but also to position Uganda as a destination for coffee tourism and international investment” he added.
