Addressing longstanding concerns over the dilapidated Burembe-Kakoba road, the Mbarara City Council has allocated a budget of 6 billion shillings for its transformation as part of the Urban Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) initiative.
The ambitious project aims to construct a 1-kilometer bituminous standard road, crucial for connecting Mbarara to Rukungiri.

The Burembe-Kakoba road, a vital link between Mbarara city and Isingiro district, has been a source of worry for locals due to its narrowness, uneven surface, and inadequate drainage.

In response to these concerns, the Mbarara City Council has earmarked shs6.1 billion from the USMID project funds to kickstart the construction of a 1-kilometer bituminous standard tarmac.
“This project is a significant step in addressing the long-standing issues with the Burembe-Kakoba road. The allocation of 6 billion shillings demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the connectivity and infrastructure of Mbarara,” Eng. Hillary Mugisha, Mbarara City engineer said.
Assy Abirebe, Mbarara City Clerk, echoes this sentiment, affirming the council’s dedication to improving critical infrastructure for the benefit of the city’s residents.
“We understand the concerns raised by the community regarding this road, and that’s why we have allocated these funds to kickstart the much-needed upgrade. Our goal is to create a safer and more efficient transportation network,” notes Abirebe.
The project has been contracted to CICO Company Limited, with an expected completion date of February 28th, 2024. Eng. Hillary Mugisha emphasizes the significance of this initiative in addressing the infrastructure challenges faced by the city.
“The construction work is in the capable hands of CICO Company Limited, and we anticipate the completion of the upgraded road by February 2024. This project aligns with our commitment to fostering development and connectivity in Mbarara,” states Eng. Mugisha.
Site engineer Sonko Gregory, representing CICO Company Limited, assures that the construction will adhere to the highest standards, contributing to the overall improvement of transportation infrastructure in the region.
“Our team is dedicated to delivering a high-quality road that meets safety standards. We understand the importance of this route and its impact on the community, and we aim to complete the project by the set deadline,” assures Sonko.
With this substantial allocation and the involvement of CICO Company Limited, Mbarara residents can look forward to a more reliable and well-maintained Burembe-Kakoba road, enhancing connectivity and easing transportation within the city.
