Tragedy struck Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal on Christmas Eve as floods wreaked havoc, resulting in the loss of six lives, with 10 individuals still missing.
The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs reported that search and rescue teams worked tirelessly on Christmas Day in an effort to locate the missing individuals, and their efforts will resume on Tuesday.
As of now, six deaths have been confirmed, and the search continues for the 10 still unaccounted for, according to a provincial authority official who spoke to media on Tuesday, requesting anonymity. The official stated that three victims were discovered in a minibus that was carrying nine passengers, while the whereabouts of the other six remain unknown.
The destructive force of the floods claimed one life in a house that was obliterated by the rushing waters, with two more individuals still unaccounted for inside the same residence.
In addition, two residents were found dead in vehicles swept away by the floods. This situation prompted authorities to resume search and rescue operations on Tuesday.
The region braces for further challenges as heavy rainfall is predicted in KwaZulu-Natal on the same day. The aftermath of the floods has left a community in grief, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to locate and support those affected by this devastating event.
