In another distressing incident, suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants attacked Nyabitusi village 1 in Kamwenge District, western Uganda, claiming the lives of three residents. This occurred just a week after a similar assault in the district resulted in the loss of 10 lives.
Isiah Byarugaba Kanyamahane, Kamwenge Resident District Commissioner, “confirmed the tragic incident, revealing that the attackers set the victims’ house ablaze during the Christmas Day assault. An elderly woman and her two grandchildren, fell victim to this horrifying attack”.
Efforts are underway to determine if there are additional casualties, with authorities and first responders striving to gather more information at the scene. One resident, arriving at the site early Tuesday around 6am, described finding the house already burnt with the victims’ charred bodies buried in the ash.
The resident disclosed that they had reported suspicious individuals in the village to the police the day before the attack. Although a patrol team was dispatched, security personnel left after a few hours, promising to return with canine dogs on Tuesday. Unfortunately, they were not present when the assailants struck.
This incident follows closely on the heels of the assault in Kitehurizi village, Kyabandara parish, Kamwenge Sub County, where 10 people lost their lives. In that attack, suspected militants looted food, money, and set houses ablaze.
Border areas, particularly Kasese District, which shares proximity with the Democratic Republic of Congo, have experienced recurring raids by suspected militants.
President Museveni, addressing the nation, labeled the assailants as remnants of a defeated ADF group in DRC, emphasizing the commitment to crush them. Despite assurances of the ADF’s defeat, these attacks persist, indicating ongoing security challenges in the region.
