A 31-year-old car dealer has been remanded to Luzira prison for allegedly defrauding a client of $83,000 (approximately Shs314 million). The dealer had promised to import two cars but failed to deliver. Authorities are now investigating the case as a significant instance of automotive fraud.

Richard Kaliisa, a resident of Kira Municipality in Wakiso District appeared before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was charged with obtaining money by false pretense. He denied the charges.
Prosecution led by Ivan Kyazze told the court presided over by Ronald Kayizzi that between July 13 and August 11, 2023, at Rwenzori Courts, Central Division in Kampala District, Kaliisa obtained $83,000 from a one Yassah Matovu Seguya with intent to defraud him.
Kaliisa had reportedly promised to import a Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and Range Rover Vogue from Dubai to Kampala for Mr Seguya but did not.
He applied for bail but was told to return to court on May 30, 2024, for hearing of his application.
