Uganda Police Force Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, urged the public’s assistance in locating Kyambogo University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Eron Lawrence, during the weekly security press briefing held on January 22, 2022, at Police Headquarters in Naguru.
The pursuit for Dr. Eron commenced when he violated bail conditions late last year following accusations of sexually assaulting a visually impaired student from a secondary school in Mukono District.
Initial reports revealed that Dr. Eron allegedly assaulted the student from Sir Apollo Kaggwa, Nakisunga, Mukono District, after returning from a conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The visually impaired student was part of a program funded by Royal Dutch Visio, an organization supporting visually impaired children in secondary schools across the country, in collaboration with Kyambogo University.
Sources disclosed that on October 7 of the previous year, the victim and fellow students attended a conference in Nairobi, led by Dr. Eron, a senior staff member in Kyambogo University’s Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation. Following the conference on October 14, the students returned to Uganda late at night, and Dr. Eron, entrusted by the team, used his vehicle to drop some of them home.
The incident came to light when one girl discovered she had been assaulted the next morning. She promptly reported the matter to the school administration, which then contacted the parents. The victim, accompanied by her parents, reported the incident to Jinja Road Police Station on October 23. Dr. Eron was arrested and held at Jinja Road Police Station until October 27, when he received police bond. However, he has been missing since then.
In a public statement, Enanga declared, “Dr. Eron Lawrence, a 56-year-old senior lecturer at Kyambogo University and Dean of the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation, accused of defiling a 16-year-old girl, is wanted by the police after he absconded police bond on December 14, 2023.”
Last year, Kyambogo University’s administration announced the formation of a committee to investigate the allegations. The university pledged to take appropriate actions in line with internal disciplinary rules to address the alleged misconduct. However, the university has not provided updates on the committee’s proceedings. Further information will be shared as it becomes available.
