In a recent address, Major General Francis Takirwa, the Deputy Commander Land Forces, emphasized the crucial role of soldiers in safeguarding the safety and security of Ugandans. Underlining the enhanced operational capacity of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces to address both territorial and regional threats, he spoke during the graduation ceremony of more than 555 troops including 180 females who successfully completed a rigorous three-month refresher course at the 3 Infantry Division headquarters in Moroto Barracks.
Major General Takirwa motivated the troops to embrace responsibility and prepare for upcoming assignments. He commended those who exhibited outstanding performance during the field demonstration exercises urging further development of the best Non-Commissioned Officers to assume larger roles within units.
Highlighting the three fundamental elements of humanity – conscious discipline, patience, and commitment – Maj Gen Takirwa emphasized their significance in the military profession, guiding the soldiers to navigate through various tasks successfully.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the Division Commander and joint security forces in disarmament operations, Maj Gen Takirwa praised their coordination with the local leadership of the Karamoja sub-region to consolidate achievements.
Major General Don William Nabasa, the 3 Division Commander, explained that the purpose of the refresher course was to enhance the troops’ capacity and acclimate them to the operational environment of Karamoja. He encouraged soldiers to uphold loyalty, patience and passion for their duties cautioning against desertion and lobbying for lenient treatment.
Colonel James Barigye Rukundo, the Division Operations and Training Officer, noted the trainees’ improved military skills and knowledge, expressing confidence in their readiness to execute responsibilities effectively. He expressed gratitude to the Commander Land Forces and the Chief of Training and Recruitment for their continuous support and strategic guidance on operational and training matters.
Exceptional soldiers were duly recognized and awarded during the ceremony, with the training program emphasizing crucial aspects such as marksmanship, weapon handling, minor tactics, political education, and health education.
The event was attended by notable figures including Resident District Commissioner (Moroto) Mr. Wopuwa George William, Deputy Division Commander Brig Gen Felix Busizoori, Assistant Commissioner of Police Francis Chemusto, Brigade Commanders, as well as Senior and Junior officers from UPDF, Uganda Police Force, Internal Security Organization, and Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), among others.
