President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was recently commemorated with a monument in Rushere Town Council, Kiruhura District constructed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineers Brigade.
The monument serves as a tribute to President Museveni’s significant role in advancing the development of the Greater Ankole region.
President Museveni’s Message To The People Of Rushere Town Council
Expressing his appreciation, President Museveni highlighted the monument’s strategic location in Rushere where he initiated efforts to educate cattle farmers about transitioning to dairy farming, abandoning nomadism and embracing settled living for socio-economic transformation, a campaign that commenced towards the end of 1966.
The President emphasized the monument’s educational value foreseeing its role in conveying the socio-economic transformation of the Greater Ankole people to the younger generation.
However, President Museveni expressed concerns about the declining socio-economic progress in the cattle corridor. He identified challenges such as the failure to shift from free-range grazing to zero grazing and wealth fragmentation after the demise of family heads. To address poverty, he advocated for dairy farming, emphasizing that substantial income can be generated on small plots of land through zero grazing practices.
Hon. Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja, the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, extended gratitude to President Museveni for gracing the monument unveiling ceremony.
He praised the President for his efforts in educating the Ankole population enabling them to shift from subsistence living to a focus on economic prosperity, a message that has resonated across Uganda.
Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu, Deputy Chief of Defense Forces, conveyed appreciation to President Museveni for fostering development in Greater Ankole. On behalf of UPDF, he assured that efforts would be made to safeguard the peace established by the NRM government, which has been instrumental in Uganda’s overall development.
Present at the function were; Retired Generals, Generals and Senior Officers, Senior Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Officials, and area Members of Parliament among others.
